How it works

How it works

At dock DESIGN, we like to think we’ve made commissioning a piece of furniture not only easy but a truly enjoyable process for all.

Here we’ve laid out the stages involved and how it all works…

First visit

After you’ve given us a ring or email, George or Tommy will call to discuss your requirements. We’ll take measurements, find out what you’d like and run through the options. We’ll also suggest a rough timeline for making and fitting. Usually, there’s about a 6 week lead time, though this can vary.

After the visit, we’ll work out a price (or prices for various pieces or designs) and email you. A 10% deposit secures dates for making and fitting.

Design

Next, we’ll get to work on the drawings. We’ll do scale drawings of the piece involved, and again include various design options if desired. We can also call back with sample colours or finishes for you to see.

Need help with ideas for all the details – what sort of handles and hinges? Overhead lighting? Or strip lighting in the shelves? Painted or in timber, or a combination? Push open doors or soft close? Whatever the question, we’ll be there with advice.

Construction & finishing

When the time arrives to make the piece, we’ll give you a ring to arrange another visit to run through everything again. A lot of people have had a few additional ideas by now and may want to add or change things at this point. No problem! We won’t charge for minor changes, though of course if you’d like to add a cabinet or make the piece we’re to make substantially larger then we can work out a new price.

At this point, we take a further 20% deposit, with the balance to be paid on completion. (We’ve seen that some companies take 60% or more deposit before they start – we don’t need to do this as we know you’ll be delighted with our work.)

We can paint literally any colour – we send off the colour sample to our paint supplier for them to match in their lab, or we also use the full range of colours from Farrow and Ball, Little Green Paint Company, Dulux, Crown, etc.

With timber, again we can match the colour of existing furniture using various stains if required. We can supply samples of various timbers. The most common are American oak, European oak, American walnut, ash, maple, beech, pine, and sapele or meranti (both similar to mahogany).

Fitting

Most fittings will take two or three days, though this of course depends on the pieces to be fitted. We’ll give a specific estimate for each job which will be pretty accurate.

Generally, there’s not much dust. We make as much as we possibly can in the workshop to keep on-site work to a minimum.

We use (clean!) dust covers for the areas where we work and a route outside, e.g. hallway and up the stairs and landing. We will do as much cutting as possible outside.

Finally, we’ll leave the house as we found it, though of course, with the addition of a new beautiful piece of furniture!
